If you ride it in the dirt, I'd be checking a KLX (250 or 300) every 500 miles - AFTER the first 3000. Valves on dirt bound KLX's tend to last 3-4000 miles on average. The KDX are 2 stroke trail bikes, lighter than 4 stroke trail bikes, and there for, the suspension works better and the engines are more powerful (because they are 2 stroke). They also take very low maintenance. Not good for beginners, but very fun to play with when you have experience.
